拙政園裡的中國畫家 The Chinese Brush Painter in The Humble Administrator’s Garden

Chinese brush painting is like playing Tai Chi You stand and paint Chinese brush painting | Chen Rudong My name is Chen Rudong Born in Suzhou I started painting when I was 9 I am very emotionally attached to Suzhou I love the landscape Suzhou people like to write and paint Many of the senior know how to use a brush There is at least one calligrapher in every alley Wu school painters are characterized by the delicacy of their painting Just like the dainty Jiangnan When I was eleven or twelve My instructor drew me a bird That’s the first time that I realized the coding capacity of ink And I love a technique which is hard to tame Five years ago I migrated from my old studio to The Humble Administrator’s Garden That was very fun for me Every Suzhou people like The Humble Administrator’s Garden I still have the group photo of my parents and I and my sister Shot in the garden Every household in Suzhou has a similar photo I could say I once painted a panorama of The Humble Administrator’s Garden A huge one out of the entrance My life in The Humble Administrator’s Garden Is all about reading and painting The garden closes at 5:30 So around that time I come out of my studio And take a little walk That’s the best time, less visitors And special views under the setting sun that you don’t see any other time The Chinese parasol tree in front of my window is my favorite It’s a beautiful tree And it is seen in lots of works by Wen Zhengming and Shen Zhou I fell seriously ill in my 30s And I gained a new understanding of life I feel like I should relax Pay less attention to techniques And set free my true nature So five or six years ago I stopped painting animals And switched my focus to landscapes In animal paintings people hardly notice the background But without strong landscape painting expertise, it can be challenging to finish a work

It’s like a stage play Where supporting roles come to the front Landscape gives me more freedom Garden is part of Suzhou people’s dream In the courtyard in the West Hill I become closer to nature I planted these trees and flowers With my own hands There are persimmon trees, pomegranate Japanese maples, wintersweet trees and pines I have a wide interest And keeping bugs is one of them There was heavy snow one year I hid my bugs under a pillow It’s snowing outside And bugs were chirping under your pillow Kinda like a beautiful concert It’s quite an enjoyment A starry summer night One time I went to Hong Kong Mr. Dong Qiao is a refined gentleman He saw my paintings And thought they were nice To some extent my paintings resonate with his writing And I read his books His words is like a dear friend That you are so luck to meet in life Painting has everything to do with calligraphy I don’t enjoy painting the same thing for a second time So I never draft It’s the flowing of emotions It’s when you look back at yourself It’s a way to relax A good painting Reaches deep down inside My love for painting Is the meaning of my life
