Inside the Tortured LEGO Mind

Hey everyone, Jason here. Today we are
joined by the one and only Kristal. Why are you joining us today Krystal? Well, I have finally finished my third in a series of sculptures that give us a look
inside the human mind. So, you’ve been working on this project for quite a long
time. You built the first one five years ago, so maybe you should remind us what
it actually was about. Yeah, um well the first one is a head exactly the same as these ones, except it’s white and as you open it up,
it opens to reveal inside the mind of the artist. It shows this yellow castle
and this colorful world with, um, with a mishmash of characters around the
outside. And the reason why we actually don’t have that model here is because it
is on display in the LEGO house right now, for the next year. So, if you ever
find yourself in Billund you can go see it there. And, a few years ago you built
the second model in this series which is.. Inside the mind of the engineer. As you
turn the crank, the side of this head comes out and a series of pistons and
gears lift the light bulb to the top, and it turns on when it gets to the top.
Which brings us to today and can you tell us what this model is about? Today
my sculpture gives a look inside the tortured mind. As you open this sculpture,
you see a dark figure with its head on its knees and a monster looming over top
that represents all of the person’s fears and anxieties and the things that
cause it grief. In the background there’s some looming mountains and some dark
storm clouds. So let’s take a look at how it works.
The first thing we’ll notice is that there are four hinge bricks on the back
of the side of the head, which are what allow the side of the head to swing open. And Kristal wanted the seam here to be
quite jagged to fit with the mood of the model. The side of the head is held
closed using a single stud, which you can see here, and it just interfaces with the
back of a headlight brick here to keep the head closed. It’s actually quite a strong
connection. The second thing you might notice is
that the inside of the head is actually quite dark, both literally and
figuratively, so Kristal wanted to add some LEDs so
that you could more easily pick out some of the details in the mountains and the
clouds, and it also adds to the mood of the model as well. The figure is sitting
on this platform here, which is connected to this quarter round gear rack, commonly
referred to as a banana gear, and it is just sitting loosely constrained between
this gear and these two wheels, and it’s connected to the side of the head using
this bar here. So that as you open and close the side of the head the gear rack
slides in and out. This gear is connected through a series of gears underneath, which we’ll see in a second, to this gear in the back, which interfaces with this vertical gear rack. So that as you open and close the side of the head, both those gears rotate at the same speed and that back gear moves that gear rack up and down. The monster is connected to the top of that gear rack through this bar, which just rests loosely on this wheel mounted at the
back of the head, and that is what causes the monster to come out and over the
figure as the head is opened. Now let’s take a closer look at what is going on underneath. With the floor removed, we can now see
how this gear drives the gear in the back through some bevel gears and axles
underneath. And we can also see how the LEDs are wired up. There are two LEDs underneath the top of the head here, with the wires running behind the mountains on the side. There are two LEDs mounted underneath the side of the head here,
with the wires running down behind these mountains. And there are two LEDs in the
front of the model here. The LEDs are all wired to a PFX brick we have in the base, which is probably a little bit overkill for the static lighting we’re using in this
model, but it is what we had conveniently on hand, so that’s what we used. I’d like
to thank Kristal for joining us and giving us some insight into her
creations. As always, thanks for watching, keep on building, and we’ll see you next
time. So, don’t look at the screen. Oh. Hey everyone, Jason here today we are joined by the one and only, Kristal and I can’t remember what to say… And why… Hey everyone, Jason here.
Okay, kay, kay three two one go. Hey everyone, Jason here. here today we are…

Well, to be truthful, I'm personally not a fan of the "black = bad" trope, or the "red = bad" trope. Personally, I associate darkness and shadows with cooling shade, the beauty of night time, and the comfort and safety of sleeping hours. Darkness feels welcoming and kind, while bright light reminds me of bleak, dreary heat and fierceness and exposure, like spotlights and stage fright. At least, that's how my own depression and anxiety feels to me. It's ferocious and harsh and blinding to my mind, like the sun. And red reminds me of roses and strawberries and tomato soup and candy apples, and happiness and uplifting energy, like a bright red painted roller coaster, or a shiny red bicycle. And gray reminds me of the lovely sound of rain, and the softness of blankets and sweaters, and the steam of a mug of tea. So, I don't know; the visual choices, for colour – to me – seem at odds with the intended goal. Mechanically, it is fantastically crafted.

I just saw your post on reddit. The sculptures are beautiful and each striking in its own way. I love the lightness and flair of the Creative Mind, but I think the Tortured Mind is the most powerful of the three for me. It is scary and reminds me that some people go through life dealing with that. Thank you for showcasing her work and thank Kristal for taking part in the video, and congratulations to the both of you on the display at Lego House:)
