Sculpting With Wood, Bronze & Clay : Wire & Clay Sculpture

All right, I take this fine wire because I
want these to be together and all I do is I just simply wrap this around like this,
because I want to secure it. And then it’s very simple, and then we just give it a twist
like that. Then I’m going to cut it, fold that down, and now we’re going to take the
clay. This is called Chavant clay. This is what I use. This is like a medium type of
clay. There’s soft, medium, and hard. So when you take it out of the package it looks like
this, but it’s a little too hard for my hands right now, so I’m going to take this block,
put it on an old plate that you don’t really want, throw it in the microwave on high for
a minute and a half. Then I test it, and I usually put it on for another minute, so I’m
going to go do that. Let’s take the clay, and we start applying it to; now I have to
keep looking at my sketch, because I want to determine. So we take the clay and we just
kind of just start pushing it around the armature like this, and that’s going to make it so
it won’t sag. If there were no armature, this whole thing would just kind of sag over and
fall apart, so it’s very important to have the armature. Then I just kind of start building
this up. You can see how soft the clay is now that I’ve put it in the microwave. Actually,
it’s plasticine; it’s not really clay. It’s a form of plastic or plasticine. It never
turns hard. It gets hard to the touch, but it will never dry like the kind of clay you
use when you put in a kiln. You’ve got to be careful when you put this in the microwave.
If you notice it’s really soft in the middle, and that gets very hot, so I just want to
make you aware of that fact. So you want to really pull it from the outside edge in. I
know I’m going to make a star base, so I want to start applying the clay down to the base,
because that’s the energy field of love that’s embracing the two of them. Ok, I’m going to
go get the tools, and then we’ll start cutting away.
