Norman, You can use the same basic techniques Simon's using with many types of sculpting clay. Although his clay melting technique does NOT work with water based clays, which will dry out rather than melt. -Matt

    What wire did you used?

    Reply
  • Stan Winston School

Hey Witchukorn, For this size maquette, Simon uses a soft aluminum armature wire to allow for maximum poseability throughout the sculpting process. Before adding the clay, he wraps the armature wire with thin floral wire to give the clay something to grab on to. -Matt

  • Timmy JHook

I've seen other sculpters do it. It's a good way to spot fix the clay so you don't mess up particular areas by over handling. Easy to burn the clay that way if you over do it though.

Not burn, tallkenwong, melt. This allows him to manipulate the clay easier, then he freezes it with condensed air when he likes what it looks like. – David
