Skating Penguin LEGO Kinetic Sculpture

Hey everyone! Jason here. Today I am excited to show you Kristal’s latest LEGO model, which is this cute little penguin skating on an iceberg. The penguin itself is super cute I think, and I have created building instructions for it if you’d like to try to build one of your very own. You can find them over at jkbrickworks.com. So, how
does the penguin actually skate? Here’s the platform that the penguin is sitting
on and it’s attached to these two Technic liftarms, each of which runs
through one of these channels in the surface and if we turn it on you can see that in action. So this might
look familiar to you, and if it does, that’s probably because you’ve seen it before. This is
actually a pretty ancient mechanism called a Trammel of Archimedes, and in more recent times these were sold as novelty toys. Now, there are a lot of different ways to build one of these out of LEGO, but if you’d like to build this one in particular I have created
instructions for it as well, which you can also find on our website. So to motorize this device what you can do is stick a pin in this liftarm here at the midpoint
between where it’s connected to each of the shuttles and that pin will now travel in a perfect circle, which means we can connect another liftarm to it, and a gear, and if we rotate that gear in place we can actually
drive the entire mechanism. So I have this model here which shows you exactly what’s in the iceberg. Here is a Power Functions M motor and it is driving that gear I just showed
you, which is attached to this liftarm, which is attached to this liftarm
connecting the two shuttles, which is essentially an upside down version of
what I just showed you. But, now we have the surface of the ice suspended from the sides, so that all those liftarms have clear space to travel through. And now we can turn it on, and that’s how it works. As always I hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, keep on building and I’ll see you next time. You can even have some fun with your minifigs. It’s actually kind of fun to play with.

You really oughta consider buying a lazy susan to display these pieces for the videos. Better yet, you could build one out of legos.

I recognize the mechanism from the original KLUTZ LEGO Crazy Action Contraptions kit (the one that had 5 models that were partially made from bricks in one's LEGO brick collection, one of which was this gadget). I couldn't really discern any uses for the device at the time, but I'm glad someone did.
