The Art of War by Sun Tzu – Animation

THIS IS A BOOK THAT I FIRST READ
IN MY MILITARY STRATEGIC STUDIES CLASS AT THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY.
AND IT’S KIND OF CRAZY THAT A BOOK WRITTEN OVER 2,500 YEARS AGO
IS REALLY THE FIRST AND THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL BOOK STUDIED
BY THE WORLD’S GREATEST AIR FORCE TO THIS DAY.
AND YOU MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY BE FIGHTING WARS,
BUT BUSINESS IS BASICALLY THE MODERN DAY WARFARE, SO IF YOU OWN ONE OR WORK FOR ONE,
WHICH SHOULD BASICALLY BE EVERYONE, THEN THIS BOOK IS JUST AS USEFUL FOR YOU
AS FOR A MILITARY STRATEGIST. KNOW YOUR ENEMY AND KNOW YOURSELF
AND IN 100 BATTLES YOU WILL NEVER BE IN PERIL. A LOT OF PEOPLE GO TO JOB INTERVIEWS,
DON’T GET PICKED, AND DON’T UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS EXACTLY
WHY. THEY WALK IN THERE HAVING NO IDEA
ABOUT WHO THEY’RE DEALING WITH. IF YOU’RE WALKING INTO A JOB INTERVIEW,
YOU NEED TO HAVE SPENT THE PAST FEW WEEKS LEARNING EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW
ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THE INDUSTRY IT’S IN. DO YOU KNOW HOW IMPRESSIVE IT IS IF YOU WALK
IN THERE AND SAY SOMETHING LIKE,
“WE’RE IN A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY. I KNOW WE’RE CURRENTLY HOLDING 20% OF THE
MARKET SHARE, AND THE CEO HAS ANNOUNCED TWO WEEKS AGO
THAT WE’LL BE TRYING TO HIT 30% BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR.
AND HERE IS HOW HIRING ME IS GOING TO HELP THIS COMPANY ACHIEVE THAT.”
DO YOU KNOW HOW IMPRESSIVE THAT WOULD BE? MOST PEOPLE’S ANSWER TO THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING
LIKE, “UH… WE TRY TO SELL SHOES HERE.
I DON’T REALLY KNOW…” NOW THAT’S CRAZY…
BUT NOT ONLY DO PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT WHO THEY’RE DEALING WITH,
THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THEMSELVES. MOST PEOPLE IF ASKED,
“HEY, WHY SHOULD WE PICK YOU,” HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO ANSWER IT.
IT’S LIKE, “UH, I GUESS I’LL WORK REALLY HARD…”
NO, THAT WAS THE ANSWER THAT THE 20 OTHER PEOPLE BEFORE YOU GAVE.
WHY ARE YOU BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHER ONES? OBJECTIVELY, WHAT ARE YOU CAPABLE OF
THAT MAKES YOU BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHER ONES? KNOW YOUR ENEMY AND KNOW YOURSELF
AND IN 100 BATTLES YOU WILL NEVER BE IN PERIL. AVOID WHAT IS STRONG. ATTACK WHAT IS WEAK. SO WHEN JEN GETS A JOB AT A COMPANY,
SHE GOES IN AND SEES HOW EVERYONE’S REALLY GOOD AT ANSWERING THE PHONE.
AND SHE SAYS, “I’M GOING TO WORK HARD AND BE BETTER THAN
EVERYONE WHEN IT COMES TO ANSWERING THE PHONE.” AND JEN’S NEVER GOING TO BE VALUED IN THAT
COMPANY. THERE ARE ALL THESE OTHER PEOPLE
WHO ARE REALLY GOOD AT ANSWERING THE PHONE. YOU DON’T WANT TO COMPETE THERE. YOU WANT TO BE THE JEN WHO EVERYONE GOES UP
TO WITH INSURANCE QUESTIONS
BECAUSE YOU’RE THE ONLY PERSON IN THERE WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT
INSURANCE. SAME THING IN BUSINESS.
NO WONDER BUSINESSES HAVE SUCH A HUGE RATE OF FAILURE
WHEN PEOPLE WALK INTO A BUSINESS TRYING TO COMPETE
WITH WALMART ON PRICE. WHY ARE YOU ATTACKING WHAT IS STRONG?
YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO BEAT WALMART ON PRICE. BUT WHAT ARE THE WEAKNESSES?
WHAT DO PEOPLE DEMONIZE WALMART FOR? THE CUP WAS MADE WITH THE TEARS OF CHINESE
CHILDREN. THE CUP HAS NOTHING AUTHENTIC ABOUT IT. SO ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU SAY,
LOOK AT MY CUP. IT’S MADE BY TREATING PEOPLE REALLY WELL,
IT’S AUTHENTIC BECAUSE OF THIS AND THAT… NOW THAT’S STILL A REALLY HARD MARKET,
SO GOOD LUCK WITH COMPETING IN THERE, BUT AT LEAST YOU HAVE SOME CHANCE OF SOME
LITTLE MARKET SHARE NOW, BECAUSE YOU LITERALLY HAD ZERO CHANCE BEFORE. TO WIN 100 BATTLES IS NOT THE HEIGHT OF SKILL-
TO SUBDUE THE ENEMY WITHOUT FIGHTING IS. IT’S AMAZING HOW EVERYONE’S OBSESSED WITH
SUING TODAY. THERE’S DEFINITELY A TIME WHEN FIGHTING IS
THE LAST RESORT, BUT A LOT OF THESE CASES COULD BE SOLVED JUST
BY PICKING UP THE PHONE. PICKING UP THE PHONE COSTS NOTHING,
SUING PEOPLE WILL COST YOU A LOT. AND I LOVE WHEN PEOPLE FINALLY QUOTE UNQUOTE
WIN, AND ARE SO PROUD.
BECAUSE THAT’S ALL YOU CAN BE, JUST PROUD. BECAUSE IF YOU LOOKED AT IT RATIONALLY,
YOU HAVE SPENT ENDLESS AMOUNTS OF MONEY, YEARS OF YOUR TIME AND ENERGY AND ALL THAT
OPPORTUNITY COST, AND NOW YOU QUOTE UNQOUTE “WIN.” MAYBE THE BENEFIT WAS HIGHER THAN THE COST
IN YOUR SITUATION, AND THAT’S AWESOME, CONGRATULATIONS,
BUT A LOT OF TIMES IT’S NOT. YOU’RE SMARTER THAN YOUR OPPONENT,
YOU DON’T RELY ON EMOTIONS LIKE ANGER AND PRIDE
TO DECIDE IF YOU’RE GOING TO FIGHT OR NOT. YOU ALWAYS TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE COST,
AND YOU DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO WIN THE BATTLE WITHOUT ACTUALLY FIGHTING
IT. BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT FIGHTING HAS A COST,
AND THAT COST IS HUGE. SO THE THREE BIG IDEAS ARE: KNOW YOUR ENEMY AND KNOW YOURSELF
AND IN 100 BATTLES YOU WILL NEVER BE IN PERIL. AVOID WHAT IS STRONG. ATTACK WHAT IS WEAK. AND TO WIN 100 BATTLES IS NOT THE HEIGHT OF
SKILL- TO SUBDUE THE ENEMY WITHOUT FIGHTING IS.

lots of potential here, i think you have a formula that works, the only critique i have is your speech. keep in mind, i think you have a good voice for this, but if you learned to enunciate things better or even took a speech class to do so, alot of those people who click off after 5-20 seconds in you analytics would disappear.

I am sorry but this video is so full of shit. Number one for instance isn't at all the clue to getting a job. It merely helps. Quite a lot yes… but it will never assure you the job. Secondly you say a phone call is easyier then suing people. I usually do agree with you. But what if the problem won't be solved talking and finding compromise. I am trying to get my money from a deposit back that was for an apartment I rented. But the proprieter wants to keep that money and wants me even to pay more… just because he is greedy. Now: as you are so clever and Sun Tzu can be used in everyday life situation… I do invite you to please tell me how to solve that problem. I bet a penny that you can't convinve him of the opoosite.

I hate it when managers selectively use quotes from the art of war.
If you read the book it's very clear a real guide to war. It's not vague at all. It is basically an ancient Chinese "how to be a good general for dummies".
If it was translated at the time, every general before the first world war would understand wat it actually means, not how people now interpret some selective parts from it. It's not a hard book, it doesn't need interpretation.

I love how people here are saying "buh buh buh this can't be applied to life it's about war right?" Most of the principals behind Sun Tzu's tactics can easily be applied to life and they should. They essentially encourage you to approach your actions intelligently and examine the situation from all angles before acting. Unlike The Prince it's not telling you to be a sociopath, the basic message of the text is "don't be a fucking idiot and you'll do well"

I am currently in the United States Naval Academy. In my humble opinion, The Art of War is one of the best books I've ever read. Not because it only applies to warfare, but also applies to every aspect of life.
My three favorite quotes of all times are:
    1. "war is a continuation of politics by other means." – von Clausewitz
    2. "patriotism is the virtue of the vicious." – Sir Walter Raleigh
    3. "The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected." – Sun Tzu

I've been called for more interviews and I have had more offers. I got the job I wanted with the salary I wanted. I totally recommend doing this for those of you who are unemployed.

it's Amazing how there's all this knowledge out there that will help you achieve greatness. in fact I would almost argue the keys of success are right in front of us almost given to us on a silver platter, yet how many of us actually do achieve greatness or success (both relative terms but nonetheless), 1 out of a million. and sadly I Wish I knew why that was, the reason I Know for myself is godforsaken laziness and temptation is what has and perhaps always will cause my failure, obviously if I let it.

But what happens if, let's say, two forces meet in battle. They have both read the Art of War, and understand it fully. What happens if they're both equally as good in applying it? Does it result in a stalemate, or what? It's like two unstoppable forces meeting, is the end result total destruction, or .. Eh. Random scrambled thought, don't take it 'too' seriously.

My life goal is to be the best I can be in all respects but taking the time to read classics has always been my weakness for the reason that they are difficult for me to understand and I do not have the time between school, work and practice to sit and focus on analyzing complicated texts. Your videos give me a solid foundation before I begin reading so that I have a general idea about the topic and then I can focus on creating my own opinions and analysis. So thanks again! The reason that the Art of War is so widely applicable is because it is not just a treatise on military warfare, but rather it is a philosophy of thought and action using military war as the backdrop. Any discipline that involves some form of competition could be deigned a "war", such as the marketplace and could thusly be applied just as effectively.

    Business is the modern warfare

    1) know your enemy and know yourself. In a job interview you need to know abaout the company and say to them and Impress them.
We have to know ourselve if they question : Why you? And not the other.

    2) avoid strong and attac weak.
In a job try to compete where everyone is weak and you re the only one that knows it. Not compete with aliexpress in Price but in Autenticity.

    3) not rely on anger and pride but win the Battle without fighting because fighting costs.
