Trying Out DOLLAR STORE Markers

Hey guys, so I was checking Twitter today, and I saw tweet from Brianna Carpenter She was showing me these markers that are available in the dollar store, and I know that’s a dollarama sticker Which is a dollar store here in Canada, and I’m like oh my god I need to find these. There are a few different marker brands out there that I’m really curious about and I’m tempted on testing but These are just so accessible that I need to go find them right now So I’m gonna go to Dollarama and see if I can find these markers. Okay, I’m here Not seeing them in a craft aisle. I’m gonna look at the school supply section not seeing them anywhere Hmm. Oh my god. Oh my god. I found them They were in the crafting aisle just had to look again. They only have the one set of colors, though It looked like there was more than one set in that tweet I saw , but here it looks like they only have the one spot for them So I got one set I double-checked the tweet it did look like there was another set that started with sort of like a khaki green color So I’m gonna go to another Dollarama and see if I can find it Alright, Dollarama number two. This Dollarama looks bigger so I have high hopes Dang it, looks like they only have this set, but this isn’t… oh no this is still a craft section (whispering) yes yes yes yes yes Yeah boyee, are these the only two sets? that’s what it looks like Okay, so let’s take a look at these they’re double-ended markers. The brand is Crafts there are six markers per pack, and they’re 3.50 each and that’s Canadian dollars. As of right now that is equivalent to two dollars and seventy two cents u.s. So that’s a pretty good price for six markers, but how good are they. Let’s take a peek? oh my *laughs* Look at the logo. It’s all scratched up. This green one looks a little bit better so this is a primary set with red, green, yellow, orange, purple, and blue. This one has some earth tones and pastels it seems to be a really strange color combination. I wonder if they have other packs Because this is not a very big selection of just twelve colors But I like that they have this set with some muted colors and neutrals and pastels. The colors are pastel pink blue grey, burnt sienna, bronze green, warm grey, and pastel peach Anyway, I’m gonna start by taking a look at these nibs and doing some swatches So, here’s the chisel end. That’s a pretty big chisel. Oh, I can smell these oof *laughs* When I use my copics, I don’t smell them at all that I smell as soon as I opened it Here’s a nib size comparison between the Copic chisel nib and this one. I’m already coloring on my nails. Where’s my colorless blender? All clean. Then there is the fine tip Alright, just looks like standard bullet nib Let’s compare that to a Copic bullet nib. It looks pretty similar, but it’s a bit bigger so do some swatching. Here’s the red alright and orange Yellow green. Where I made a dot of red. blue and purple It’s your standard rainbow basic set I guess. Then we have these guys here I’m gonna start with that pink and blue. I find it very interesting. It’s earth tones and pastels. Oh, what the I mean it does say blue grey. I guess it’s supposed to be a cool grey Okay, never mind. It’s not blue That cap color is just a little bit misleading and the pink. Oh good. I was like please be pink *laughs* Here’s the burnt sienna Ohhh. I actually pretty cool like that brown. It’s really close to e 74 it doesn’t look like the cap It’s not as warm as that, but I really like that brown. Then bronze green mmmm nice again Not at all like the cap color But I like it. The cap color looks gold and this is just a dark desaturated green. Now for warm grey Oh yes, that’s actually pretty nice then pastel peach again Not even close Here’s all of them with the swatches side by side these ones are not even that inaccurate It’s pretty close these ones not as close the gray is pretty close and the pink is close-ish It’s a bit bright though a bit of a highlighter pink next I’m gonna try some blending just to see what I can do It’s hard to blend when your colors aren’t that similar to each other Also without a brush nib. I can’t really do the feather blending technique It’s when you apply a lot of pressure, and then do it tapered stroke you can kind of get it with this nib, but the nib but this just too small and It doesn’t taper as well as a brush nib would. Orange is kind of similar to this maybe should do a gradient with these I’m gonna try with the chisel nibs instead because feel. It’s really difficult with that tiny little bullet nib The blending is not the best but I think a lot of it is coming down to Lack of color selection because these greens they’re not that different from each other And they had a pretty nice blend these ones weren’t as smooth, but it still was pretty smooth all right now I’m gonna try to create a piece of art using these markers And then I’ll let you know what I think of them. So based on the colors I had I thought it would be a good idea to draw a turtle because I had seen a picture of a turtle recently on Twitter it was a rainbow turtle and it made me want to draw turtles and then halfway through this drawing I had this Crisis where I felt like I had recently seen a picture of a turtle on flowers But I couldn’t remember where how do we know if I for sure saw it’s just one of those things that hits me sometimes when I’m working on art and like wait Did I see this somewhere recently am I subconsciously copying it? and you start to panic But I mean it’s not like it’s the most original idea anyway I’m sure this has been done a thousand times already this turtle on flowers, so I was like you know what Bailey just Suck it up and finish it But I always have that fear like am I copying someone because I don’t want to but what idea is 100% original Anyway, so yeah the turtle I saw on Twitter. That was the original inspiration did not have flowers so That’s good. I was sketching it up on my iPad Pro using the program procreate And I also added a bit of color to it just to plan out what colors I would use because I was working with a very limited palette But my turtle didn’t end up being as blue all over as that original Color thing that was just to get an idea for what I wanted and then once I actually started using the colors I tweaked it a bit here. I have some rubbing alcohol, and I put it inside a syringe. This is not a medical syringe It’s meant for other uses like Crafting and I know what else you would use it for but it has a blunt end. It’s not sharp or anything You can also just use a paintbrush instead if you want I actually thought this looked really neat on the back of the page it actually looked Cooler that I did from the front because there was just more contrast. there was more white showing through So that’s something you can do by the way is just draw something on the front add Drips of rubbing alcohol and then flip it over and complete the illustration all my yellow ended up getting covered up anyway So it didn’t really matter in the end, so how did these markers perform? Honestly, they’re not much different than any other alcohol-based marker They were a bit smelly at first, but once I got going in the drawing I honestly didn’t really notice it so when I first uncapped it earlier in the video I was like whoa but it actually wasn’t that bad in terms of smell the color selection is not that great But maybe they did Manufacture more colors and Dollarama doesn’t stock it. Is that Dollarama own brand? That crafts brand? I don’t know. I don’t know if they order it from someone else or they get it made I didn’t think the dollar store did that but they have so many products that are that brand that I’m like I don’t know but They only had the twelve colors in store from what I saw If you want to snap your cap on to the back end of the marker it will not snap on to it To me the biggest drawback to these is a very common drawback to a lot of alcohol-based markers is that there is no Brush nib. I don’t know if it’s just very costly to manufacture these nibs I don’t know why markers never have the brush nib maybe it’s because they’re trying to mimic the original Copic marker And they’re just behind on the times I don’t know, but so many brands do not have the brush nibs, but thankfully more and more are being made with them But I feel like whenever you come across a really really cheap brand for alcohol markers They do not have the brush nib honestly You can’t really go wrong with these it comes out to 45 cents US per marker which is dirt cheap They’ve works like any other alcohol-based marker like I mentioned I feel like there’s no brand. I’ve tried where I’ve said Oh, this is absolute garbage. This. Ink is the worst all alcohol-based markers work pretty Well really it comes down to the selection of colors that that brand offers And if they have a brush nib if that’s important to you and whether or not They’re refillable these ones aren’t there weren’t any of you feels available at the store so it’s it’s those things you have to look at because ultimately the ink is not that different between different brands and oftentimes with high quality art supplies Light fastness is an issue so the cheap brands will fade in the Sun and the expensive brands won’t but with alcohol-based markers None of them are light fast not even copics They all fade and so that’s not even something you have to concern yourself with either so if you’re looking to try alcohol-based markers for the first time I think this is a great place to start or if you’re just looking to expand your collection and Don’t want to put in a bunch of money. Yeah, these were fine. The one thing I don’t know is how durable the nibs will be in the long run? I don’t know if they’re gonna start shredding or deforming And I don’t know how much ink is actually in the marker They do have a really big square barrel But I don’t know how full they are it might just look like there’s a lot of ink in there But really it might run out quickly and none of mine ran out while I was using them But it’s just something that could happen Someone also just tweeted me recently about some markers at Daiso that they saw and they come in packs of two so I would love to make a trip down there one day and try out some of those markers because It’s just so cheap, like why not? In terms of slightly more expensive brands I have been really eyeing up the art n fly markers. I really want to give those a try I was gonna try Ohuhu markers, but I couldn’t find brush nib ones I don’t know if they exist or not if you have a link for them on a Canadian website like I was looking on Amazon And there weren’t any brush ones, but if anyone has any let me know so I don’t really want to invest in any Brands that are somewhat expensive unless they have the brush nib with these ones They’re dollar store items, so it was so dirt cheap for me to try them out, but anything that’s gonna cost me like $50 and above I don’t really want to spend the money on it unless it has the brush nib There are more and more brands popping up and so more and more of them are doing brush nibs And so I feel like you got to keep up you got to keep up with the demand of the brush nib Maybe it’s just me maybe I’m the only one who wants the brush nib. I don’t know And if you’re like Bailey why do you love the brush tip so much it’s because it’s so versatile it can cover large areas quickly or you can cover teeny tiny areas it can go more fine point than a bullet nib and It can be just as thick as a chisel nib It’s also much easier to blend because of the feather blending thing that I mentioned earlier in the video, but also again Just covering large area It’s hard to blend with a little bullet nib when you’re only covering teeny tiny areas And then you have to switch to the chisel nib But it’s not as precise whereas if you just have a brush nib it does everything at once It’s just it’s just so much better, but in terms of ink these markers seem just fine again I found these markers at Dollarama I don’t know if Dollarama is in any other countries other than Canada but check your local dollar store and see if they have anything like this and Like I mentioned someone saw similar markers at Daiso so they’re cropping up here and there anyway. I hope you guys enjoyed this video I’ll see you on Friday next week for the next art video because that’s when the YouTube artists collective is and I’ll also be posting on Saturday the very next day, so they’re getting it to videos next weekend Thank you so much for watching, and I’ll see you then

Btw, they do run out of ink quite quickly, but only if you use them a lot at once. Also, Dollarama now stalks more makers by a different brand in shade ranges. They have blue, teal, grey and pinkish purple shade ranges.

Btw… Yes, the reason all the markers with brush nibs are so expensive (i.e. copics) is because they are expensive to make. And you didn't point this out, but the ink laydown is actually super nice! They have really smooth coverage and no streaks

I think these are also sold under the "Selectum" brand as well…at least I got some that look identical to these, just branded differently. My Bronze Green was dead though…the nibs were hard as a rock and even re-wetting them did nothing. The colours are surprisingly smooth and not streaky for water based ink markers. I have found "Craft" brand 6-pack dual-tip markers, but they are white markers in a clear, hard plastic case vs the flimsy one here…and come in more colours…the only set I picked up so far is a skin tone set…but going to pick up more . This is all at Dollarama too. EDIT – these are alcohol markers? I just assumed they were water based…going to have to try blending them with my other alcohol markers.
