Watercolor Brush Pen Review – Facebook Haul!

heyeveryone welcome back to my channel I’m brushes and bunnies and today we have a face book haul video it’s a little bit of little haul I didn’t spend so much money and i didn’t go too crazy but i found this sort of advertisement across my facebook wall and i don’t normally click on these things but this one caught my eye basically they were promoting these watercolor brushes and it’s from they were selling it on the website called sugar and cotton now the website itself looked a little bit scammy where it was more so like yeah okay there’s only five products left in stock you have to buy it within 10 minutes and you have to buy now and it’s on sale and I got caught into it and I decided to just okay I kind of want to give it a try let’s give it a try that looks pretty cool and I ended up you know buying it and it came in the mail three and a half months later although shipping normally should be within six weeks that’s what they said but they came from Malaysia or directly from Malaysia I don’t know where the product comes from I can’t find really any information on the company itself it says touch nice here on the actual pen but on the packaging there’s just like no indication where these pens come from and I googled it and I still can’t find any information so whether it’s a knockoff brand or whether it’s a really bad product I will find out in my test review but we will see you you can also get these on ebay i have seen them on ebay i’m not sure about any other store locators I haven’t seen these in the store shops like the art stores either I haven’t seen it anywhere except for this website that i came across so retail price i paid about $39 this was US dollars and through this sugar and cotton website and I paid $39 dollars, it said the sale price was 130 or 129 dollars whether that’s true or not I have no idea because I did find these on ebay for approximately twenty-five dollars so actually I have no idea i think maybe retail price would go around 30 maybe dollars i don’t really know know guys but that’s so far what I’ve been seeing on online i probably should have done a little bit more research before I spent forty bucks on them but whatever what’s really cool to note is is that this set also comes with a water brush so water brushes you guys don’t know it’s a super cool I’ve really really like these basically place for water water painting watercolor painting and it’s a brush here where you can just twist the top off that and you can fill it up with water and these are really cool if you’re traveling a lot and you don’t want to carry all your brushes around it also helps with the water issue where you have a cup of water or whatever you can just fill this up squeeze the edges a bit when you’re painting and the water will come out from the brush tip so it makes just kind of doodling on the road a little bit easier cause so we’re going to give it a go we’re going to try out this product alongside this water brush and see how it works and also give this video a thumbs up if you guys like these videos as well as well forget to subscribe and to follow my social media accounts facebook instagram all of the links can be found below so let’s give this a go I actually have no idea what to expect so before i get started on the material as well as the product give it a pretty honest review i just like to apologize to say that I’m sorry if the kind of painting here is unfocused my camera was actually not focused at the time I thought it was right but it’s not so it’s a little bit messy looking but I think you can still get a pretty clear picture of how the product looks as well as how it reacts on watercolor paper so now let’s get to the fun stuff what paper was I using i was using arches watercolor hot pressed paper this is a beautiful nice thin paper very soft to the touch there is barely any texture and i always use this when i do watercolor painting just because i prefer it I prefer minimal texture compared to a kind of rough rigid base I just really like this type of paper and I find that the colors turn out to be much more vibrant as well so what I was using it with the actual watercolor pens it went on pretty smoothly I didn’t really have an issue the only thing I really noticed was that these kind of ink pens or the ink within the pen was sorta running out in a way where I had to really work it so that the ink would come out much more I think one of the biggest issues I had with these pens was the fact that when I would draw it on the paper it would be sort of like missing ink spots I don’t know how to quite describe it where when you put the marker like the tip of the marker onto the paper you’re expecting to have a nice fluid fluid sort of motion come out of the pen in this case it was really something where I had to really work at it so that the ink would come out smoothly and kind of cover the paper entirely I had found information a little bit of information online saying that once these pens get wet if the tip gets wet and the ink should come out much more smoothly and I expected sort of getting that kind of result but actually it just didn’t work I felt like it would dry out at certain points and I was getting a little bit frustrated with it because all of a sudden I would get this smooth blotch of ink that would come out and then another point it would be kind of dry and I would have to work at it until it would be more more ink would flow out and then that would kind of get a little bit messy so I don’t know about that but I just didn’t really like that aspect so for the entire portrait I set the base with these watercolor pens and I did my hardest work with it but the colors were not really working together as much as I liked you so I kind of struggled with the skin tone because she turned out to look a little bit more orangie which is why later on I brought in the faber castell polychromos and that’s usually typically the way that I worked normally with mixed media art anyways and in the end it didn’t look so bad but at the same time I was just really struggling with these pens I’m not sure if it kind of talks about sort of the quality of the pens either in terms of the ink coming out as well as you know having issues with the kind of blotchiness at one point and then another point having issues with the fact that there was literally nothing coming out and it was almost kind of dry maybe I was just not using them right but then again it’s really not rocket science to learn how to use these for the majority of the painting i actually for the entire painting I pretty much just did the technique where I drew with the marker first on the paper either I wet the paper first or I drew dryly on the paper so I wanted to see how it would react in both situations I think it worked much better when I drew with the marker first and then I added watercolor afterwards or not watercolor I added water afterwards and that’s when I was able to blend much better but in terms of the hair to kind of cover a massive surface of paper I think it works better in the sense where I would wet the paper first and then I would apply the watercolor pen on top and then just kind of work it in as I went with the different colors as well as with the water brush what I like about these watercolor pens is the fact that you can use them like markers I thought this was a pretty interesting way to do watercolor actually and I would probably be willing to try different brands just to compare and to see especially some of the sort of like the well-known brands I think that the quality might be completely different I might not just have liked it because this might be a knockoff product or just might be a really bad quality product I really don’t know but I will probably be trying a different type of brand just to see how I could probably work it much better as what I did for this one although I have to say that drawing with the marker is quite interesting so you can really kind of achieve a different sense of technique as well as color saturation and yeah okay I think that it’s it’s it’s quite a interesting experience to try especially with watercolor overall I think that I give this product a 6 out of 10 for certain reasons that I’ve listed in this video already I think the quality of the ink was one major one that has always been sort of an issue in terms of just our products in general needs to have a nice soft flow guys I really don’t like it when it’s just like dry and you have to work at it and you spend so much money on these products so they should work but generally speaking six out of ten I’m willing to try other sort of things actually I think I’m going to downgrade back to five out of ten just because of the color selection as well it was a little bit hard to kind of find colors that would work together there’s a pretty limited palette i would say especially in terms of blend ability apparently and these are also refillable but again just because of the fact that I literally cannot buy or find this product anywhere it just doesn’t make it accessible and not purchasable so yeah probably not going to buy these again that being said guys have you guys ever tried any other types of watercolor brands or watercolor pen brands i should say let me know in the comments below if you guys have a favorite brand i’m more than willing to buy it and to give it a try I love trying new things so let me know what you guys like what you guys have tried already in terms of watercolor pens I think it’s pretty interesting I think it’s a cool medium to give it a go with and yeah give me some feedback on this let me know what what you guys like and which brands works for you that being said I wish you guys a lovely day and I hope it’s sunny on your side of the world because it certainly is not over here in Berlin it’s quite cold and rainy and I wish it was spring weather but it’s not anyways I will see you guys very soon and till next time my bunny buns bye

I think you should add a drop of water to the tip pf the pen to make it flow well

I fell for the same scam $39.99 US and one of my markers came leaking (darkest colour of course) so I was disappointed. I did try them out, but am a novice by far and I agree with your 5/10 rating. Buyer beware. Thanks for this vid.

Okay, I'll explain something. The website looked sketchy because it is something called DROPSHIPPING, where someone finds products from stores, usually overseas, and sells it to you, they help big businesses like Amazon and Alibaba sell products that mainly won't be sold because sometimes its a hassle for people to find them. The fact that it took that long means it was most likely from AliExpress, a Chinese company, it usually takes atleast 12-20 days of shipping. Also, you cannot find infomation about the product because it is not tied to the site selling it, the sellers are just that, they help AliExpress or Amazon or whatever was selling it before continue to sell it. Hope this explained it. People are making lots of money doing it. DROPSHIPPING stores have no inventory nor merchandise, when you click on their products, they buy it from the original seller and send it to you. I hope I cleared some of the reasons why all the weirdness. The reason why stores are disappearing is because of online stores that practise dropshipping. Also, a lot of products that come from China sometimes gets rebranded, but in China that is not usually a big deal, my guess is it has to do with communism. So it's also hard to find exactly the real brand of the product. If I were them, I'd use a closer brand like Amazon to find products that cannot sell, that way, the customers don't have to wait for a month.

Dammit I literally just bought these off Introvert Palace yesterday. Same "sale" price and "discount" price except was on a tumblr post. Sketchy website too with weirdly inaccessible inventory listing. Joann/Michael's it is then for watercolor pencils instead!

Thanks for the review and unfortunate that you blew $40 on them and had to wait 3.5 mos for them? I Googled this biz & they have lots of bad reviews.

Oh my, there are many other great brands of watercolor marker brush pens. I use Tombow Dual brush water based brush markers. I also like Marvy Le Plume2 and Staedtler Mars Graphic (MG does mot sell individual pens so a big minus there.) Jane Davenport also offers a large line of excellent water based & perm pen/brush media. And there are so many others with better quality and price than this Sugar & Cotton set you got ripped off on. I think a 5/10 is way too generous. Still, thanks for the review.
